The Sea Grass sponge (spongia gramminae) is one of the most common species and therefore it is relatively inexpensive. It is not as dense as other sponges, though it is relatively wearing and versatile. It has a soft texture, not as soft as sea wool or the 'soft honeycombs'. As you can see from the photos, there is a great deal of variability between the shape, texture and colour of this type of sponge. Suitable for skin of babies and children and for massage. Even adults have more fun in the bath when using a sea sponge. Our sponges can be used with soap to create a foamy lather or with clay. Due to the incredible capacity of these sea sponges to hold water, they are great for rinsing the body. A natural unbleached sea sponge offers a great solution for people with sensitive skin. Beside use on the human body, natural sponges are used for pet grooming; by painters for creating stippling and faux effects; by potters and for polishing and filtering. Sea sponges are superb for washing up and for household cleaning. People have always marveled at sponges. Collecting has been going on for 4000-5000 years. These sponges are harvested from the Aegean Sea and they are still vital to the economy and culture of the Greek Islands.
